I was reminded tonight that I am in this because I love people. I had the opportunity to speak to about 20 journalism students about photojournalism at the University of Maryland this evening. One of my colleagues at USA TODAY teaches an online journalism class there and invited me to come lecture again.
Last time I lectured there was in the Spring and it was good to be back. Every time I share some of my work I share some of my story–or rather the story God has and is writing in my life I am reminded of the power of photography and why I am a photojournalist.
Photojournalism and video journalism are great. It’s exciting, new every day, and adventurous. However if those were my reasons for being in this field I would be “missing the boat.” I believe photojournalism is simply a means–a medium to convey a story about life–stories about beauty, injustice, redemption, hurt, and of love.
I am thankful for every story that allows me to come into the center of someone’s life and tell their story. I am thankful for every wedding couple who invites me into the innermost circle of their lives to tell their story. Finally, I am thankful for all those who have encouraged me to take big risks to pursue my passion. I never cease to be amazed at how practicing thankfulness can bring great joy into my heart.
