I was diverted from the RNC to New Orleans to cover stories related to Hurricane Gustav. I’ve been on the ground here for a little over 24 hours now and it’s been quite a ride.
10:30 delayed flight touches down in New Orleans, La with fellow photographer Rob Curtis who works for The Army Times
11:30 secure SUV rental
12:00 buy over 10 gallons of water and other emergency supplies. Search for gas cans to no avail.
12:45 sit down for a meal at Denny’s and work on booking alternate hotels due to closures
1:45 arrive at hotel in the French Quarter in downtown New Orleans
2:00 Unpack and continue working on logistics with Rob
2:45 Sort through 40 emails from editors, reporters, and photographers at USA TODAY about Gustav coverage
4:00 Sleep for a few hours
7:45 Begin fielding calls from editors and photographers about satellite phone that might not make it in to New Orleans before the city shuts down. Then try to sleep a few more minutes
10:00 okay, I’ll try and finish this list tomorrow. The video I did today between finding gas and avoiding traffic on the freeway is done so I must sleep now (2 am)
