I flew into Frankfurt the other day. I believe it was on Wednesday when I landed–no, I did land on Wednesday. It just felt like it was the same day as my departure, Tuesday, due to the long day of travel and unsatisfying sleep on the plane. I’m here working on a story for USA TODAY. The weather is fantastic, the Germans are soccer fanatics, the light is beautiful, and nobody arrested me for making a wrong turn into the ladies restroom (vacant–thankfully). Who knew “Damen” is German for “Ladies”?
Contrary to what appears to be well marked roads, everything is hard to find here. Highways are not labeled east or west, only the city to which they lead. Tough for me since I do not know anything about German geography. Even tougher that cities sometimes have four consonants in a row and vowels with odd symbols over them.
