A shock wave passes through the body, bright light meets the eyes, piercing sound assaults the ears, and shrapnel penetrates the skin. This is common of those near IED’s or vehicle born IED’s (VBIED’s). Even if a soldier escapes the shrapnel they are often left with what is called Traumatic Brain Injury–something the military is pouring millions of dollars into
This story about a serious injury that many of our soldiers are receiving due to blast injury. I traveled to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany in June to tell this video story. The story ran late July and ran on the front page of USA TODAY. It was a sobering experience to watch injured soldiers being unloaded by the dozens every day at the military hospital. Many of whom were being kept alive by large live-saving and monitoring machines strapped to them and their gurneys.
“LANDSTUHL, Germany — It took nearly three years for the Army to understand the damage to Army Sgt. Chad Joiner’s brain after a roadside explosion left him unconscious in a Humvee on June 28, 2005……. ” -Greg Zoroya, USA TODAY
