I had the opportunity to work on a story about the unexpected impact the Nintendo Wii gaming system is having on the older generation and even injured soldiers in therapy. This video story took me to New York to interview video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto (the man behind Donkey Kong, the Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, etc), D.C. to interview a recovering soldier Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and Maryland for Wii bowling at a retirement home. My video, photos, and the story by our fabulous reporter Mike Snider can be found here on USA TODAY’s website.
The story ran in the paper on the front page of the Life section today Thursday May 15, 2008. The story was placed below the lead Life story & photo about the actors behind the voices in the new animated film “Panda.” I guess it’s hard to compete with the likes of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, and Lucy Liu. I wish my photo of Miyamoto was more compelling. However, when I’m squeezed into a 15-minute shoot which includes both stills and video on the n’th floor of a small hotel room in NYC my options and creativity become a bit stifled.
