Okay so maybe I wasn’t abandoned in Detroit in December. However many structures were abandoned, at least for the most part. Steve took me to one in particular that he thought was particularly interesting–and that it was. It was also particularly creepy. Look at some of the photographs and see if you can figure out what this place used to be. Then watch the slide show again in black and white and see if your response is at all different. Are they better, worse, creepier?
I believe many people think a photograph will be more compelling simply because it is black and white. I would like to pose this question to you.
Why do (or don’t) you like black and white photographs?
Many people see a black and white photograph and say it is “artistic” or “good.” Is it nostalgia that gives the photograph that “feeling ?” Is it because the color was distracting and you can focus more on the moment, emotion, composition, etc? Consider why you do or do not like black and white. This may be an interesting exercise in our own visual literacy. Discuss below.
I had so many things happening in December that I’m catching up day by day. I’ve got lots more photos and stories to share. Stay tuned.
